May 2007 Newsletter
Hi everyone,
Since my last update email on the 14th December 2006, a lot of exciting news has happened regarding the Theo Jackson Bursary Fund.
Given that many of you are very busy, I have tried below to summarise the highlights of the fund over the past six months as succinctly as possible:
- The 1st Theo Jackson Bursary Fund Golf Day raised R86,000 (including pledges and donations) and was a fantastic success and great fun as I’m sure all of you who were present will confirm. We had a full field of 30 fourballs, some fantastic prizes and 14 of the 18 holes sponsored. Thank you to all who participated and contributed. As a result of this success, both courses at Royal JHB will be booked for next year’s golf day.
- We now have 70 individuals and companies who are contributing either via lump sums or debit orders to the fund. Monthly debit orders are now up to R3,700. All contributors are entitled to tax refunds – please email me should you require a tax refund.
- We have been fortunate to receive some very generous donations and pledges over the past six months. Although every donation, no matter how small is appreciated, I would like to highlight the following:
o R15,000 from the Jeppe Quondam Athletics Section
o Agreement by Deutsche Bank Africa Foundation to sponsor the full cost of one boy’s schooling and hostel fees (a commitment of approx R170,000)
o Agreement by Chad Peterson of Insurance Solutions and Bruce of Action Sports at the golf day to sponsor one boy’s schooling and hostel fees
- As a result of the above, and interest from other corporates and individuals, we are hoping to sponsor five new boys next year !! This will take our total up to 7 boys in possession of scholarships – all within two years of the fund’s inception !!
- We have received 11 applications for sponsorship next year, all of whom are worthy recipients of the scholarship. Applications are channeled through the principals of various primary schools ensuring candidates who fit the criteria of poor financial and family circumstances and yet have a character and spirit which the principals vouch for. It is heartbreaking to think that our resources do not allow us to give all these boys a scholarship.
- We are receiving a surprising amount of interest from corporates and educational trusts who have a budgeted CSI spend or who simply believe in the values and ideals of what we are doing. As a result, I am hoping to confirm more donations, such as those pledged from Deutsche, Chad and Bruce, within the next three months. Interestingly, most of these contacts are non-Jeppe leads. Should you know of any companies or individuals who may be interested in what we are doing, please contact me.
- We are in the process of designing a website for the fund. This will be operational by the end of the year.
I hope that brings you all up to date. Thank you once again for your continued support.
Kind regards,
Dale
